What does a wrong leadership hire really cost?

What does a wrong leadership hire really cost?

A wrong leadership hire costs far more than a salary. It costs you time, momentum, and the trust of the people who report to that leader, and retained search is how I help owners avoid it.

I have watched good companies stall because the wrong person sat in the right seat. The owner usually feels it first. Then the team does.

The salary is the smallest part

Owners tend to count what they paid. That is the easy number. The harder cost is everything that did not happen while the seat was filled by the wrong person. Decisions waited. Good people carried extra weight. Some of them left.

    The team pays for it

A leader sets the tone for every person below them. When that tone is off, your best people notice first. They have options. A wrong hire can quietly push out the very people you were counting on to grow.

    You pay for it twice

When a leadership hire fails, you are back where you started, only later. You run the search again. You rebuild trust again. You also spend your own hours covering the gap, and those hours were supposed to go toward growing the business.

    How retained search prevents it

Retained search means I work for you, on one search, with full attention. I am paid to find the right leader, not the fastest resume. That changes the work.

Here is how we run it at VXL:

    • We start with the business. What does this seat need to deliver in the first year? Who does this person lead, and who do they answer to?
    • We build a veteran-only slate. These are leaders trained to take responsibility, lead people under pressure, and finish the mission.
    • We test for fit with your team, your pace, and your way of doing business.
    • The retainer is credited toward the placement fee. You are not paying twice for one search.

    The guarantee

If a placement doesn't hold, we replace within 90 days. I stand behind the work because the cost of getting it wrong is real, and I would rather carry that risk than leave it with you.

    What I would do first

Before you post a job or call a recruiter, write down what this leader must accomplish in the first year. Be specific. If you cannot name it, the search is not ready yet. That one page saves more bad hires than any interview question.

VXL finds the leaders and builds the systems that help business owners grow. Retained leadership search is where that often starts.
